HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT SHIRT
CREATING HARMONY – BALANCING DETAILS AND FABRIC.
WE ACCOUNT FOR FIVE FACTORS WHEN MAKING SHIRTS. FABRIC AND FIT ARE THE
FIRST TWO. THE REST? DETAILS, DETAILS, AND DETAILS.
“MAKING SHIRTS ISN’T DIFFICULT,”
SAID PETER DE JONGH, NN07 PRODUCT MANAGER
AND SHIRT GURU. “CREATING DETAILS IS EQUALLY EASY.
THAT SAID, PERFECTING THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN
A SHIRT AND ALL ITS DETAILS IS DIFFICULT.
THE FABRIC AND ITS CARE MUST WORK WITH COLLARS,
SEAMS, STITCHES, AND BUTTONS.”
WHEN YOU BUY AN NN07 SHIRT, we guarantee these and other features and functions: NN07 shirts incorporate design and quality – they don’t lose their color or shape during washing and thus hold a faithful place in your closet for many years.
We also guarantee that we’ve done our absolute utmost to ensure that your shirts are perfect. All details are thoroughly thought-through – from fabric, thread, and button selections to seam placements and collar thickness. The smallest details get 100% consensus, and to achieve it implies that someone isn’t totally satisfied.
“We are experimentalists,” said De Jongh. “We can take suit fabric and make it into a shirt and then discover that it’s an absolutely perfect combination – pro- viding it harmonizes with other details. That’s what I love most about working at NN07. Nothing is obvious here, and nothing is impossible – as long as it’s done with the intention of creating the perfect garment.”

PETER DE JONGH REVEALS THE SECRETS BEHIND THE PERFECT SHIRT
FIT
Fit makes a good shirt perfect. Once you’ve found your fit and size then you know the shirt suits you.
FABRIC
We spend an incredible amount of time searching for the best fabrics. We use many types of fabric constructions – and regardless of the fabric, it must have life.
THREAD
Thread must be strong and suitable for various shirts. For example, denim shirts need thicker thread than lighter weight fabrics.
INTERLINING
A shirt is not just what you see. Its interlining greatly affects the way in which it feels against the body
STITCHES AND SEAMS
Many parts of a shirt contain more than 10,000 stitches to construct a shirt. And it’s important to be careful about the seams.
We select the appropriate stitch type based on fabric, fit, and design.
BUTTONS
Cheap plastic buttons on exclusive fabric can be a disaster. We often use genuine mother-of-pearl buttons, and we always experiment with fabric and sizes before make a final selection.
EXTRA BUTTONS
Buttons should of course sit so well that you don’t lose them. But if that happens, there must be ex- tra buttons.
COLLAR TYPE
Different collars fit different situations. We have many different variants but try to avoid cutaway collars because they are made for ties – and ties are not something we do. My personal favorite is a collar with removable collar bones. This is a good all-round collar that builds volume and lays very well.
COLLAR SIZE
Regardless of the type of collar, its size and thickness must align with the way in which we want the shirt to be perceived.
SILHOUETTE
We try to vary the silhouette of our shirts, so there’s some variation. For example, we add a pleat in the yoke to get extra volume. But, as with everything else, what we do must complement the rest of the shirt.
PLACKETS
Not too many people think about plackets. They make a huge difference. Plackets work incredibly well on casual shirts, but for an extra clean look, they should be avoided.
POCKETS
The perfect shirt must have pockets. That said, the way they look is crucial. Should they be round or square? Discreet or oversize? Pockets create character. Identity. So pockets should express what you wish to express.
