ERNESTO ROMAN
Creative Director, Deer Mountain Inn
WE WERE A BIT CURIOUS ABOUT OUR HOST — THE MAN FROM THE CARIBBEAN WHO LANDED IN THE CATSKILLS. WE LOVE PEOPLE WITH A PHILOSOPHY LIKE: “LIFE IS TOO SHORT, DON’T BE A BORE”.
WHO IS ERNESTO ROMAN?
I’m 35. I was born and raised in Cartagena, Colombia, along the Caribbean shore. I ventured to the USA when I was 17 and moved to Utah, where I fell in love with the mountain landscape. After years of living in NYC and working in the photography, fashion, and hospitality industries, I found the Catskills and decided to give this lifestyle a chance. It’s been almost 3 years now.

WHAT ROADS LED YOU TO CATSKILLS AND DMI?
Technically I was looking for a change of pace and milieu. As a very wellknown LCD Soundsystem song says “New York I love you, but you’re bringing me down”. I wanted a break from big-city hardships. I wanted nature to surround me. I was offered the chance to visit the Deer Mountain Inn, and the rest is history.

WHAT DOES GOING BEYOND THE ORDINARY MEAN TO YOU?
This has kinda always been my motto. I’ve always been a bit restless and usually prefer things that aren’t ordinary. Since my early teens, I always understood that I didn’t want to live the same predictable cookie-cutter life my peers had in mind. I sought adventure and welcomed the idea of exploring the unknown — of taking a different turn in life to see what’s out there. A more simple answer: Life’s too short, don’t be a bore.

ARE YOU AN ADVENTURE SEEKER,
OR DOES LIFE JUST HAPPENS TO YOU?
Based on my previous answers, you could say that I’m an adventure seeker. Although I leave some good room for the unpredictable. In my experience thus far, life will always happen to you no matter how perfectly planned it is. I’ve experienced great things in both directions.

IF YOU’D SPEND YOUR DAYS AT ONE PLACE FOR THE REST OF
YOUR LIFE, WHERE WOULD THAT BE?
Back to basics. I’d be by the ocean.
